Last year’s inaugural Lake Tahoe Ironman was a spectacular event. The athletes had to suffer through a 2.5 mile swim in freezing temperatures, a 112 mile bike ride with some hellacious climbs, and then, just to polish off the day, run a marathon. While for most of the athletes it was the
most challenging physical experience of their lives, for those of us lucky enough to volunteer or watch the event, it was a spectacular exhibition of athletic prowess and the power of perseverance.
While Tahoe locals cheered on all of our local heroes who competed in this incredibly challenging event, the award for the fastest Tahoite went to life long resident Kara La Point from Truckee. Kara is the coach of the North Tahoe High School cross-country ski team, and after her impressive result in last year’s Ironman she decided to become a pro athlete.
On May 21st, at 7 PM at Alpenglow Sports in Tahoe City, Kara will present: “A Triathlete’s Story” the account of her Lake Tahoe Ironman experience.
The event is the season kick-off for Biking for a Better World, a non-profit organization which raises awareness to improve the cycling community in North Lake Tahoe. They work to strengthen, youth programs, trail systems, and local cycling events.
Go see Kara’s presentation, it’s sure to get you charged up. Then make plans to be here for this years Lake Tahoe Ironman on September 21st. If competing is not in the cards, spend the day volunteering or just cheering people on. You will be inspired and impressed by what humans can accomplish…and aside from the inspiration of the athletes, you can’t help but be impressed with Lake Tahoe on what will hopefully be a beautiful fall day.
