With the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia fast approaching, it’s time to get excited about a whole crop of Tahoe athletes who have set their eyes on glory in Russia. It’s also a good time to remember 1960, when the Olympics came to Squaw Valley. Fortunately, we can get a lot of help with our remembrances, by taking part in the Olympic Heritage Celebration January 11-19th.
Many of the Olympic Heritage events are being held at Sugar Pine State Park, venue for the cross-country ski competition at the1960 Winter Olympics. Other events will be in Squaw Valley.
January 11th
There will be an opening ceremony, including a dance performance by the Eagle Wing Dancers, at Sugar Pine Point State Park at 11 am, followed by a guided snowshoe and cross-country ski of the Olympic Trails. In the evening, you can take part in an Olympian meet and greet at the Plaza Bar in Squaw Valley.
January 15th
Scholastic Ski Day: State Park Rangers will present an in-school program on the 1960 Olympics to Tahoe Lake School 3rd Graders.
January 16th
Join the Open House at the Sierra Ski History and 1960 Winter Olympics Museum in the Boatworks Mall from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, then enjoy special deals at the Boatworks Mall restaurants.
January 17th
Meet a skiing legend at the Nordic Legends Dinner at Granlibakken Lodge, 6 pm
January 18th
Compete in the Citizens against the Clock Biathlon Race where the 1960 Biathlon was held at Sugar Pine Point State Park from 10:30 to 2:30. Biathlon is a fun and challenging event combining shooting and cross-country skiing. That evening, you can join a guided Full Moon snowshoe tour.
January 19th.
Squaw Valley events include a Mighty Mites Race and a Squaw Valley Olympic Heritage Walking Tour led by local Olympics expert David Antonucci from 12-1:30 at the Base area at Squaw Valley. As the day progresses, head to the KT Deck from 1 to 4 pm to hear live music from “The Nibblers,” followed at 7 pm by the premiere of the film, “Cusp of Glory” at the Plaza Bar.
